Information about some of the most important pilgrimage sites for followers of Buddhism. All of these sites are located in either Nepal, where Buddha Gautama was born or in Indian, where he died.

Buddhist Pilgrimage Sites

Lumbini
This city in the Rupandehi district of Nepal is most famous for being the place Queen Mayadevi is said to have given birth to Siddhartha Gautama, who - as the Buddha Gautama - founded the Buddhist tradition.

Bodhgaya
This city in the Gaya District of India is most famous for being the place the Buddha Gautama attained nirvana (enlightenment).

Samath
Buddha Gautama delivered his first teaching in a deer park in Sarnath, Indian, which is also known as Rishipattana.

Kusinara
Buddha Gautama died in Kusinara, which today is the town of Kushinagar in India, not far from India's border with Nepal.
